This Dallas, Texas hip-hop artist drops his Def Jam Records debut single with a resounding review of systemic racism in the United States through “Like Me,” a song dedicated to his late cousin who was gunned down by police officers back in 2012. Sessions pulls no punches, between his single cover photo, which invokes a time most of us think to be long gone in our checkered history, to his rapid-fire lyrics, recognizing that the noose has only been replaced with a gun. This acknowledgement adds an even heavier atmosphere to the chorus as he utters what all young black people experience everyday, “Things don’t look good if you look like me.”
