It’s pretty slow going in the new indie music scene, as most artists are out on tour and hitting the festival circuits versus putting out new music on the platforms I closely follow. So, when I ran through my SoundCloud stream this morning, and came up relatively empty, I thought I’d take some time to listen to some album downloads that had been sitting on my desktop for a while, and just happened to come across LANY (stands for Los Angeles New York, and is pronounced as it looks). This L.A.-based band put out a debut album entitled, LANY, at the end of June, and all I can say is that it’s a simple, straight-up indie-pop album with alt-R&B-ish undertones.
The best song, in my opinion, “Pancakes,” comes towards the latter part of the album, and is built upon a pretty simple theme of missing the little things that are shared between people when they aren’t around each other for whatever reason, in this case, pancakes, Levi’s, and holding hands. Musically, there’s something about the simplicity of the percussion, keyboard, and synth that just works seamlessly with lead singer, Paul Klein’s, vocals. I don’t know…I could also just be straining to find a silver-lining at this point in the summer.
