Here are the best tracks that I came across (in no particular order) through my audio travels this week when prepping for my show or writing for my local music blog. Enjoy!
Beach Fossils – “Tangerine (feat. Rachel Goswell)” – This Brooklyn band recorded their album, Somersault, across several recording studios throughout New York City, releasing the finished product on Bayonet Records, which is co-owned by frontman, Dustin Payseur. They’ll be at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, Tuesday, July 18th! You can buy tickets and get more info here.
The Ocean Party – “More To Run” – Out of Melbourne, Australia, this six-member indie-rock band just released their latest LP, Restless, the sixth album in seven years back in late 2016. This new single from a seventh album, Beauty Point, to be released August 18th, and talks about everything from love, personal health, and anything else needed to keep going in today’s world.
Sally Dige – “Holding On” – Self-described on Facebook as a “Danish-Canadian audio-visual artist” living in Berlin, Germany, the first music from the song would normally be placed at some early time in the 80’s. She described the story behind this song in a recent interview: “I wrote the song during a time that I thought I was losing my mind and losing all hope in everything. I was searching and digging within the inner depths of my soul to find strength to hold on to, to keep going. I had a dream that I was digging deep into my pockets to reach my soul to find that strength that I needed. I was moving forward so slowly; my legs moving like pushing through water, but all that mattered was that I kept moving and everything was going to be alright.”
Moonoversun – “Needed Me” – A remix and re-envisioned cover of Rihanna’s recent hit featured on Hairy Recording’s compilation of similar covers from various artists entitled, Lick You Up and Down, this Brighton-based indietronic duo bring the lo-fi synth-pop sound and mash it with R&B to great effect. Though not everyone will be a fan, it’s a cool addition to their pretty limited releases thus far.
Electric Guest – “Oh Devil (feat. Devin Di Dakta)” – This is song about being in a relationship with someone who has devilish qualities that sometimes rear their head at certain moments over others. As they describe in song, this is not always a bad thing, and can be pretty fun, though there’s a degree of unpredictability that comes with this. It’s a fun, electro-pop track.
Marika Hackman – “Time’s Been Reckless” – The latest from this London-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, this is arguably the best from her album, I’m Not Your Man, and definitely the most ear-catching track. I’m still trying to figure out if this is a song about having sex with a relative stranger who is just not able to let go and enjoy the experience, or being someone who is just a sexually aggressive asshole who runs over those who care about and want more of a relationship. It’s probably both and something in-between. Some may not get the full track below, and can check out this official audio music video.
Yung Aloha – “Today” – Just a beautiful track that includes a signature sound from this relatively unknown DJ (one of two from the Yung family of DJs), which sounds something like guitar from a Herb Albert song. It seems like a perfect background tune to play while laying on the beach, having left the hustle and bustle of the city behind.
